POV – If everything is predestined by luck, why work?
This question connects back to the previous blog’s comment on the life and death cycle belief system among Sanatani Hindus.
The goal of human life is to attain Moksha, or freedom from this cycle. The moksha is attained when our paap (sins/liabilities) and punya (virtuous activities/assets) become a net zero! Just like a balance sheet completes when assets and liabilities match, until then it’s work in progress. Paap and punya get printed on our subconscious minds, called samskaras, and run through lives, driving tendencies. Prarabdha, or destiny, is the balance of paap and punya. Horoscopes indicate our cumulative Prarabdha at the time of birth. The 360-degree view of the sky and planets are the enablers of Prarabdha and work like inner software. We have been given the freedom to do our liable duties/Karma and enjoy the fruits of punya (Bhagya), and the cycle continues.
Now the interesting part is the timing of events. In Vedic astrology, the Vimshottari (120 years) dasa system runs in sequence and cycle. It starts from where you ended in your last life. If the dasas of planets are favorable in your lifespan, they bring you the fruits of your accumulated punya and you experience good times or luck. If that specific planet’s dasa doesn’t come during your lifespan, it manifests in the next life or the following. Therefore, no good work goes in vain; it manifests at the right time.
Lord Sri Krishna simplifies this in the Bhagavad Gita, “We have the right to work, not the fruit.”. Work here refers to dharmic duty (Kartavya) given to us. Astrologically, the 10th house indicates one’s tendency to perform duty, which reflects in overall success in your career and all responsibilities thrown at you. This also enhances the chance to get blessings from your boss at the office!
A sense of dharmik duty comes from one’s own conscience, not from scriptures, legal judges, or religious priests. Dharma just ‘feels right’! It binds you, or you are bound to it, and it’s personal. Doesn’t matter if you visit temples or not. Fulfilment of this work counts and prepares you to be lucky. Lord eventually takes care of matching our balance sheets, making it a net zero!
